Creating your Creche and how to display your santons- The start
If you wish to start a Nativity scene as they are made in Provence, the important decision to take before starting it, is the choice of size and style of your santons.
The more usual size is the one we are offering: 7 cm or 2, 3/4 inches. And for the style, it is a very personal choice, but if you choose a traditional style, you are sure to have the largest choice of characters.
Now, let's start the "creche" or Nativity.
The first santons to buy are(of course) Mary, Jesus, Joseph, a donkey, an ox, and an angel. That is what we call the 6 character nativity.
Next, you can add the 3 wisemen. And you have the basic Nativity scene with its 9 characters.
Immediately after that you need the shepherds, and many sheep, because they were the first to arrive at the scene. Do not hesitate to have lots of sheep, and even some goats. They use to graze together. When you have a large Nativity scene, you can place shepherds and sheep in different places.
And right after the shepherds, shepherdesses, comes LE RAVI. This character is very important because it represents the simple people (Ravi meaning simple mind) Le Ravi was supposed to be the first to tell the world that "Jesus was born". And its place is very close to the creche itself.
To these basic characters, you can add a camel rider, and some camels and elephants, because they arrived with the wisemen (or Kings) and were carrying their gifts.
